Gaza, strage di bambini

Almeno trenta morti palestinesi in meno di due giorni. E tra le vittime, otto bambini, compreso un neonato di cinque mesi. È il bilancio parziale dell'ultimo capitolo dello scontro tra esercito israeliano e il governo di Hamas a Gaza. (...)
Oltre ottanta i razzi sparati da Hamas, una pioggia di Qassam partita da Gaza, nonostante il piccolo lembo di terra a ridosso del Mediterraneo sia stato colpito senza sosta dai raid israeliani.
Soprattutto ieri, dopo il duro monito da Tokyo del premier Ehud Olmert. Bersaglio dell'aviazione di Tel Aviv, le basi di lancio dei razzi ma anche le postazioni di Hamas: una tattica che non ha, dunque, risparmiato i civili, in un territorio dove vivono, ammassate, un milione e mezzo di persone.
Risultato: quattro bambini tra i 7 e i 14 anni, due fratelli e due cugini, sono morti ieri mentre giocavano a pallone nel campo profughi di Jabalia. Un loro vicino di casa di 12 anni è deceduto poco dopo in ospedale. Decine e decine i feriti, in una situazione disastrosa dal punto di vista sanitario. Aggravata dal fatto che, tra i bersagli colpiti, c'è stato anche il Palestinian Medical Relief Committe di Mustafa Barghouthi, uno dei centri importanti per l'assistenza ai gazani. (...)

A call for transparent inquiry from PNA on the death of Majd Abdul-Aziz Al Barghouti

In a letter addressed to President Mahmoud Abbas and to Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, Luisa Morgantini, Vice President of the European Parliament, calls on the Palestinian National Authority for a serious investigation on the death of Majd Abdul-Aziz Al Barghouti, on 22nd February, inside a PNA Detention Center and in no clear circumstances, because he died for the fault of the heart muscle but according to a report (source Mezan) there were signs of torture to the victim's wrists and to his thigh.
"I knew with dismay the death of Majd Abdul-Aziz Al Barghouti - wrote Luisa Morgantini on her letter- the Palestinian Authorities has to support and start a transparent inquiry into the incident and in particular making clear the way he was treated inside the detention centre and his health conditions
Since Al Barghouti was arrested, on 14 February 2008\nby the Palestinian General Intelligence in the West Bank, for political reasons and -it seems- without observance of the legal process, it's as well necessary to go beyond by examining the way he was caught under arrest, confirming or not that he was not presented before a prosecutor or a judge after twenty-four hours of detention as stipulated in Palestinian Penal Law continued the letter.
Refusing all logic based on doubled standards, I am convinced that it's necessary to condemn violence and human rights violations, always.

In una lettera indirizzata al Presidente Mahmoud Abbas e al Primo Ministro Salam Fayyad, Luisa Morgantini, Vice Presidente del Parlamento Europeo ha chiesto oggi all'Autorità Nazionale Palestinese di avviare un'accurata inchiesta sulla morte di Majd Abdul-Aziz Al Barghouti, avvenuta lo scorso 22 febbraio dentro un Centro di Detenzione dell'ANP e in circostanze non chiare, perché Majd Al Barghouti è morto per insufficienza cardiaca ma secondo un rapporto (fonte Mezan) sono stati ritrovati dei segni di tortura sui suoi polsi e su una gamba.
"Ho appreso con sgomento della morte di Majd Abdul-Aziz Al Barghouti – ha scritto Luisa Morgantini nella sua lettera- l'Autorità Palestinese deve dare il suo sostegno e avviare un'inchiesta trasparente su questo caso e in particolare chiarire il modo in cui Al Barghouti è stato trattato all'interno del centro di detenzione e le sue condizioni di salute". "Poiché Al Barghouti è stato arrestato lo scorso 14 febbraio dai Servizi di Intelligence palestinesi della West Bank per motivi politici e -a quanto pare- senza l'osservanza di un processo legale, è allo stesso tempo necessario andare più a fondo, esaminando il modo in cui è stato tratto in arresto, confermando o smentendo il fatto che egli non sia stato condotto davanti a un pubblico ministero o ad un giudice prima delle 24 ore di detenzione come sancito dal codice penale palestinese" prosegue la lettera. "Rifiutando ogni logica basata sui 'due pesi e due misure', sono convinta che sia necessario condannare ogni violenza e violazione dei diritti umani, sempre." (...)

Fiera del libro di Torino: boicottare sì o no?

La Fiera del libro di Torino dall'8 al 12 maggio avrà come paese ospite Israele
e qua sono inziate subito le polemice: il 2008 Israele festeggia i 60 anni di fondazione, la Palestina festeggia invece i 60 anni di nakba ...
e quindi c'è chi sostiene che la fiera vada boicottata (tra cui Suad Amiry, Paola Canarutto) e chi esprime le ragioni di un non boicottaggio (compresi gli organizzatori della Fiera in una lettera di risposta a Tariq Ramadan, o l'appello contro il boicottaggio di Khaled Fouad Allam e Victor Magiar) ...
A me è piaciuto questo intervento su Hawiyya che invita a non fare boicottaggio in quanto arma poco efficace in questo frangente ma a rispondere con la guerriglia comunicativa della controinformazione .... e citando Nazione Indiana e il blog di Sherif El Sebaie ...

Nello spot gli ex militari chiedono a un altro ragazzo israeliano dove abbia svolto il servizio militare

Di recente in Israele è stato lanciato uno spot per il servizio militare, accompagnato dallo slogan: "Un vero israeliano non fugge". Nel video si vedono alcuni giovani israeliani che, in quello che sembra un albergo indiano, si vantano delle loro esperienze militari con una ragazza straniera.
È un dato di fatto che, abbandonata l'uniforme, molti giovani fanno lunghi viaggi all'estero. Nello spot gli ex militari chiedono a un altro ragazzo israeliano dove abbia svolto il servizio militare. E questo rimane in silenzio, con gli occhi bassi. Il messaggio è chiaro.
Lo spot è stato girato in un piccolo ristorante di Tel Aviv. Alcuni dei camerieri, infastiditi per essere stati coinvolti nel video, hanno deciso di girare un contro-spot. La scena è simile, anche se i camerieri parlano in ebraico e la ragazza non ha i capelli biondi.
Due dei protagonisti raccontano di aver abbandonato il servizio militare perché non sopportavano quello che erano costretti a vedere ogni giorno. La ragazza, invece, ha lasciato l'esercito, dove faceva l'assistente sociale, dopo il suicidio di due soldati.
Il terzo cameriere ha scelto il carcere pur di non arruolarsi. Gli altri commentano: "Lo stato non si è mai occupato della sua famiglia. Perché mai lui avrebbe dovuto servirlo?". "E tu?", chiedono infine tutti al quarto ragazzo. Che, imbarazzato, non dice una parola. Il video si chiude con una scritta: "Un vero israeliano non fugge… dalla verità".
All'inizio non volevo scrivere di questa vicenda. Per parlare di un fatto del genere, mi dicevo, passo troppo poco tempo in Israele e inoltre conosco gli umori della mia società solo attraverso la tv.
Poi, quando ho scoperto che il contro-spot si era diffuso su internet, mi sono ricordata che oggi viviamo nel mondo virtuale non meno che in quello reale. Inoltre avevo seguito le polemiche sollevate dal video tra gli utenti della rete. Così ho capito che anche voi, cari lettori di Internazionale, meritavate di conoscere questa storia.

Jerusalem, Ramallah, and Bethlehem came to a virtual standstill when President George Bush came to visit last month to give the peace process a push. The residents of Jerusalem, in particular, were happy to see him leave due to the havoc his presence created on the city’s traffic for three days. The peace process is also at a standstill. There are periodic meetings between Palestinians and Israelis but not much seems to transpire from them. Gaza continues to be the hermetically sealed jail that it has become - not that it was much better in the past - with the added punishment of power cuts for hours on end, reduced supplies of fuel (especially during the unseasonably cold spell of a few weeks ago) and food staples, not to mention other products that Israel is not allowing into the Strip, thus bringing the economy to a near total collapse. Many factories and workshops have run out of the raw materials needed for their work, thus forcing them to shut down and lay off their workers. Another casualty of the Israeli occupation, perhaps less visible but no less serious, is the environment. For years now, Israel has been siphoning off the West Bank’s underground water reserves, abundantly supplying Israeli settlements created on Palestinian lands with it, while rationing the water supply to Palestinian villages and farmers. Water is one of the subjects covered in this month’s issue of This Week in Palestine, which is dedicated to the environment. Among the other topics highlighted are wildlife, desertification, global warming, waste management, and biodiversity. Legislation dealing with laws that should be put in place to protect the environment is the focus of one article, while another looks at the effect of the environment on the economy. It is interesting to see how the environment affects many aspects of our lives. Awareness of such issues should start early and be incorporated into the school curricula. Think twice before throwing that candy wrapper or tissue paper on the ground or out of your car’s window.
